Y School students had a fantastic time at their dinner dance in October, a highlight of the school year.
Now in its second year, the event has become quickly become a favourite among Y School students, with 53 current students and four university/RTO students who completed their practical unit at the school in attendance.
In addition to the students, 23 Y School staff, along with five Y Staff, joined the celebration, including Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dr. Tim McDonald and Executive Principal Liz Parker. Staff were delighted by the event’s success and moved by the joy on the students’ faces as they arrived.
“Many of these students didn’t think they would have the chance to attend a ball or dinner dance when they left mainstream high school,” said Youth Worker Janelle.
CEO Dr. Tim McDonald also highlighted the significance of the event, emphasizing that taking an alternative educational path doesn’t mean missing out on life's special moments.
“The Y School provides equal opportunities for students to flourish in all aspects of life – body, mind, and spirit.”
“School events like the dinner dance give young people the chance to be part of a community, connect with each other and feel like they belong no matter their educational path,” he added.
The evening was a true celebration of how students are flourishing academically, socially, and emotionally. Their presence at the dinner dance reflected the progress they have made at Y School and their readiness to embrace new opportunities.
One of the nights highlightst was the student awards, where peers voted to recognise those who best embodied the 5Cs. The 5Cs – Competence, Connection, Character, Confidence, and Caring – are key qualities that when nurtured, lead to a sixth C: Contribution. This final ‘C’ represents the profound impact young people can have when they are empowered to contribute positively to their communities and society at large.
As part of the Growth for Impact Strategy, Y School is committed to fostering these qualities in every young person it supports. Through its programs, the Y School creates environments where youth can build skills, develop meaningful relationships, strengthen their character, grow in confidence, and nurture a caring attitude toward others. These qualities not only benefit the individuals but also have a ripple effect on their families, communities, and society.
Another memorable moment of the night was the presentation of the Mind, Body, Spirit award, which was given to one outstanding student who truly exemplified the spirit of the Y School community and Y WA as a whole.
The atmosphere was electric as students cheered each other on, celebrating their achievements and reinforcing the supportive and empowering environment they have built together. Other fun highlights included dancing to the iconic YMCA song with peers and staff.
The school is already looking forward to future events that will bring students and staff together, celebrating their accomplishments and strengthening the sense of belonging and opportunity for all.
